Mexico City, Mexico
Reports coming from Penal del Altiplano have said that notorious Sinola Cartel leader Joaquín Guzmán, “El Chappo,” has escaped from the Mexican supermax prison. This is the second time Guzmán has escaped from a prison, the first being in 2001 from a US federal prison.
Guzman is on trial for drug trafficking and is wanted by the US government on similar charges. The extradition process is to America has been slowed with the drug trafficking trial in Mexico; this has been further complicated with the Attorney General of Mexico stating that he has no intention of granting extradition to the United States due to their lax attitude to the cartels where they grant lower sentences in exchange for information.
Mexican police and government officials have not confirmed whether El Chappo has escaped, but police and military presence in the region have increased.
