Mexico City, Mexico
Our sources in Mexico City have been contacted by a senior member of a vigilante group in the south of Mexico, and has informed us that a former cartel member has joined their group. The source, demanding to remain anonymous, has stated that the former cartel member has brought along fellow disgruntled cartel members and have offered themselves as mercenaries.
While it may seem bizarre, the story is becoming more and more common in Mexico, with cartel members switching sides in order to survive the conflict, ready to “fall behind whomever seems the most powerful” says Rev. Javier Cortes, a priest in the diocese that has experienced this before who organizes programs to assist victims of drug-related violence. “It’s a terrible confusion to live under,” he says.
This raises concerns about an increased level of violence as cartels look for retribution and rivals join other cartel groups.
