A dual bomb attacks on the BBC’s offices in Mexico City has killed more than 15 people and injured about 50 others. Additionally, 3 journalists located in second-tier cities were kidnapped, and videos were released of their execution. National security expert Javier Nino of the University of Mexico said in a televised statement that the bombings had "the hallmarks of a cartel-related attack. They are trying to use the slaughter of innocent people to cow us, to frighten us out of criticizing them."
The attack comes on the heels of statements made by the Mexican Secretary of the Interior who reassured journalists that the government would heighten sentencing for kidnappings of journalists. The BBC had previously been highly critical of the cartel. In reaction, the UK Home Office and the BBC have evacuated all journalists.
The attacks have not been revendicated.
