Early Sunday morning, mass demonstrations by various anti-immigration and pro-Second Amendment groups in the cities of El Paso, Phoenix and San Diego quickly turned violent. The violence broke out shortly after police showed up. Dozens of arrests have been made and violence is blamed as having been instigated by several white supremacists groups that came from other state.
Sources tell the BBC that many of those arrested come from as far away as Idaho and Alberta. A few officers have been injured and reportedly some of the protestors have been critically injured, whether from infighting among the groups or from the police remains to be confirmed.
Before the violence broke out the BBC had a chance to speak with several of the protestors. One such protester, Bubba Gump Bridges, from rural Arizona told our correspondents "Dem Cartels done blowed up der country now dey come fer are jerbs!" Various slogans on banners and t-shirts ranged from "Speak English" to "Diversity = white genocide". One reporter from a local Spanish news outlet was shouted at by one group until another chased them out of the area and the police moved in. The violence broke out shortly after that. At this time the violence has not fully been contained and sources tell the BBC that the national guard may be deployed soon. More on this story as it unfolds.
