Once
again it appears that the government in Mexico has let Notorious Drug
Lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman go. Back in 2001 he escaped prison after
obtaining influence over every prisoner and prison official, including
the prison’s director. Last year The New Yorker released an article in
which Mexican Officials admitted that corruption within the police
system remains a major issue. Yet still Mexican Ambassador Eduardo
Medina Mora insisted when he was captured for the second time that
Mexico would not allow him to escape again. “Once bitten, twice shy” he
was quoted by The New Yorker as saying.
Make
that twice bitten now. Despite a newly elected president who vowed to
stamp out corruption nationwide it looks as though the United States’
neighbor to the south is as corrupt and incompetent as ever. More
importantly how many times is the United States going to let this slide?
WHen Chopo was captured there was an opportunity to place him in
American custody, but the Obama Administration clearly doesn’t have the
courage to put pressure on Mexican Officials. The White House seems
content to just let the chaos south of the US border spiral into
deadlier territory. As the war gets worse down south more and more
mexicans will flee across the US border, which the Obama administration
has also failed to fortify, putting American jobs and health care costs
at risk.
