As the Mexican authorities issue a nondescript public statement, our sources close to the matter have confirmed that the Mexican military is now on high alert. Reconnaissance planes are surveilling the area surrounding the Altiplano Penitentiary, located about an hour-long drive West of Mexico City (population: 9 million). Photos of the military, patrolling the streets of nearby town Almoloya de Juarez, have been leaked to Al Jazeera.
On the other side of the border, the United States has apparently increased security along the Mexican-American border. At this time, movements between the US and Mexico have continued. It is highly unlikely that El Chapo would flee to the United States at this point in time.
