EL CHAPO, LIVING LIKE A KING

May 17, 2014

MEXICO CITY- In 1995, Joaquin Guzman Loera, otherwise known as El Chapo, spent almost a decade in a Mexican maximum-security prison. However, conditions were not atypical for a prison setting. Using his formidable power, El Chapo lived like a king. Cocaine and women were regularly trafficked into the prison. He, also, had access to female inmates in the prison.

Quite the romantic, El Chapo wooed fellow inmate Zulema Hernandez. In his love letters to her, he would often allude to the fact that he would only be in the prison for a “few more days”. Later in January 2011, Guzman did in fact escape.
Just this February, Mexican and American authorities captured Guzman alongside 750 pounds of cocaine. Guzman has returned to the same Mexican maximum-security prison. Unfortunately, El Chapo no longer lives like a king.
