When he was elected to the Mexican Presidency, Enrique Peña Nieto vowed to fight corruption in Mexico. Now 17 months later he is being denounced for one of the most blatant displays of corruption in Mexican History. Last Wednesday the President of Mexico took a self with Academy Award Winning Best Actor Kevin Spacey. In the photo, a relaxed Pena Nieto smiles into next to the grinning star of the Netflix television drama House of Cards, in which he plays Francis Underwood, a fictitious politician known for making crooked and criminal deals. “One of these Presidents is real. With President Enrique Pena Nieto in Mexico last night,” Spacey tweeted May 7 to his nearly 3.4 million followers.
Pena Nieto’s office then offered the photo to the news media, saying that the two had run into one another at a tourism expo in Cancun. Everyone took it as genuine, that is until a blogger for Forbes magazine reported that the meeting between the two was no accident: Spacey had been paid by the Mexican Tourism Board to attend the event and appear with Pena Nieto. The reported bill paid for by the Mexican taxpayer was the equivalent of 8 million dollars. It would appear that the Cartels are not the only groups corrupting the Mexican State. The tentacles of Hollywood appear to also be reaching their ways across the border, many of whom happen to also be cronies of our celebrity in chief Barack Obama. The spiral of corruption and cronyism south of the border continues.
